BELMONT, N.C. -- Marissa Olmos scored a pair of second-half goals and Paige Hinds saved both shots she faced for her first career shutout, leading Belmont Abbey to a 2-0 field hockey victory Saturday morning at Alumni Field. The win was the fourth straight to open the year for the Crusaders, who surpassed their win total for the inaugural season in 2016.
After a scoreless first half which featured three shots for each team, Belmont Abbey took control. The Crusaders outshot the Valkyries (0-4) 7-0 in the period, finding the net for the first time at the 39:34 mark. Olmos received a perfect right to left cross from Madison Ensley to easily beat goalkeeper Ciriaca Petitto.
Less than three minutes later, with 27:38 to play, Olmos poked in a rebound of a Demetria Barrow shot from the right side.
Belmont Abbey held a 10-3 lead in shots and an 8-4 lead in penalty corners.
The Crusaders return to action next Saturday with a trip across town to face Queens.
