BELMONT, N.C. – Playing its toughest opponent of the season so far, the Belmont Abbey Field Hockey team fell behind early and never recovered in a 4-0 loss to Lindenwood Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 18th minute when Victoria Buysschaert put in a rebound in front of the cage. Lindenwood (3-0) followed up with another goal in the first half as Shelby Easly worked her way around the corner to create an angle for her second goal of the season. Crusader goalkeeper registered four saves in the period to keep it close, then added seven more in the second for a career-high 11.
After intermission, Lion forward Tara Robben added two goals running her team-best total to five on the year.
Lindenwood held a 23-8 advantage in shots, including 15-5 on goal.
The Abbey returns to action next weekend when it wraps up its three-game homestand against Sweet Briar. The Raise the Red match begins at 1 p.m. at Alumni Field.
