Cheerleading Takes Second at Nationals

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Belmont Abbey Cheerleading Team recently took second place in its division at the Cheer LTD CANAM Nationals. Fifteen Crusaders, including the mascot, competed in the All-Girl Medium Collegiate Division this year after taking the national championship in the Small Collegiate Division last year.

Christopher Newport took home the title with a score of 85.43, while The Abbey totaled 63.97 points. Georgia Southern was third at 56.78.

Belmont Abbey received its highest scores in Jumps (5/5), Cheer/Crowdleading/Voice (8.1/10), Running Tumbling (4/5) and Collegiate Image (10/10). They had no deductions in the categories of Safety Rules, Timing, Choreography & Music, Sportsmanship and Interruption of Performance.

There were 11 collegiate divisions with 39 different collegiate teams represented.

Belmont Abbey has a second competition scheduled as it will compete in the 2018 Clash of the Conferences Collegiate Cheer Competition at Limestone on Saturday. The competition will start at 2 p.m. with the Crusaders slated for a 2:18 performance time in the All-Girl Advanced Cheer Division.
