BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team strung together 10 runs from 13 hits to beat the Wingate Bulldogs 10-5 Wednesday at Abbey Yard. The Crusaders improve to 17-5 on the year as Wingate moves to 15-8.
Three Crusaders recorded multi-hit performances including a 3-for-5 game from Matt McGarry. Robert Lathrop and Jakob Rolly each tallied two hits in the contest as Colin Rosenbaum, Luke Cureton, and Kevin Elefante all drove in two runs apiece.
The Abbey got on the board early as Rosenbaum drove in McGarry in the first inning with a sac fly. Cureton drove in Nick Beinlich giving the Crusaders the 2-0 lead in the first. Rolly launched his fifth home run of the season over the left-field fence to push the lead to three in the second. Thomas Yoder lifted a sac fly, scoring Cureton in the fourth and McGarry singled in Rolly in the sixth increasing the Crusaders lead to five. In the sixth inning, Elefante drove in two runs with a single to left field as The Abbey held on to a 7-0 lead.
Wingate's Austin Turgeon worked an RBI single in the seventh to put the Bulldogs on the board but The Crusaders answered with three in the bottom of the seventh to add insurance. Rosenbaum stroked an RBI single followed by Cureton's RBI grounder. Cureton later scored on a passed ball to give The Abbey their tenth run.
In the top of the ninth Wingate scored four runs stringing together four hits including three doubles.
Belmont Abbey's started Griffin Baker recorded his second win of the season tossing 4.0 innings only allowing two hits with six strikeouts. He was relieved by Sam Luchansky, Alex Nodarse, Beck Way, and Robert Frantzis to secure the win.
Wingate starter Riley Isenhour was given the loss in his 4.1 innings of work allowing five runs on six hits, one walk while striking out four.
The Crusaders will travel to Mount Olive to play the Trojans in a three-game Conference Carolinas series starting Friday at 3 p.m.
