BELMONT, N.C. – Jakob Rolly hit two home runs as the No. 3 Belmont Abbey baseball team dropped the first game of the series to North Greenville 5-4. Belmont Abbey is not 16-3 on the season with a 6-1 Conference Carolinas record. North Greenville improves to 13-3 on the year with a 4-0 conference record.
North Greenville took the lead in the first inning as Utah Jones scored on a fielder's choice, after reaching on a single. The Abbey responded in the second as Luke Cureton crushed his third home run of the year. Belmont Abbey took the lead in the fourth as Rolly hit his first home run of the game over the left-field wall.
North Greenville took the lead in the fifth as they collected four hits including two doubles as they plated four runs, to take the 5-2 lead.
Belmont Abbey rallied in the bottom of the ninth as Rolly launched his second home run of the game into left-center. A.J. Hendricks continued the rally doubling in his pinch-hit appearance. Nick Beinlich worked a walk and Matt McGarry was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Colin Rosenbaum. Rosenbaum lifted a fly ball into center field to bring The Abbey within one but that would be all Belmont Abbey could muster with the final score ending 5-4.
Cameron Busby started on the mound for The Abbey pitching 7.0 innings allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits, one walk while striking out seven, in his first loss of the year. Tucker Burgess recorded the win in his 6.0 innings allowing two runs on seven hits no walks and seven strikeouts. Canaan Cropper pitched three innings for his second save of the season.
Belmont Abbey continues the series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Abbey Yard beginning at 1 p.m.
