Crusaders Win Season Opener 13-1

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team opened the season with an impressive offensive performance on their way to a 13-1 win over Newberry. The Crusader racked up 15 hits led by three-hit performances by Colin Rosenbaum and Thomas Yoder. Nick Beinlich, Matt McGarry, and Jake Rolly collected two hits apiece with Rolly driving in three runs.

Belmont Abbey opened the scoring in the second inning when Josh Genthe doubled, scoring Yoder, while Kevin Elefante drove in Genthe with a sacrifice fly. The Abbey added two runs in the third as Yoder laced a two-run single. Rolly homered in the fourth and Rosenbaum drove in a run with a double to build the Crusader lead to seven.

The Crusaders added RBI singles in the fifth and sixth inning and broke open with four runs in the eighth, for their 13 runs.

Cameron Busby threw six scoreless innings for The Abbey, allowing eight hits while striking out four. Alex Nodarse came in relief as did Wes Wood, to seal the win for Belmont Abbey.

The Crusaders continue their series against Newberry tommorrow with a doubleheader at Abbey Yard, beginning at 1 P.M. Before the first pitch, the Belmont Abbey baseball team will honor Abbey Alum and current Oakland Athletics pitcher Emilio Pagan.
