Crusaders Swing Past SWU 16-2

BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team captured the first game of the weekend series with Southern Wesleyan as they stormed to 16-2 victory. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 16-11 on the year and 8-5 in Conference Carolinas action, while the Warriors move to 7-17 with a 3-7 conference record.

Abbey starter Cameron Busby earned his third win of the season, going 7.2 innings allowing just two runs. Busby struck out 10 on the afternoon and did not give up a walk.

The game started with two and a half scoreless innings before the Crusades broke the tie with two runs in the third. Kennan Stanley opened the inning with a triple and scored on Robert Lathrop's double. Nick Beinlich produced an RBI single as the Crusaders took the 2-0 lead.

In the fourth, The Abbey recorded five runs on four hits as Lathrop drove in two runs with his second double of the night, scoring Kayden Krause and Josh Genthe. Matt McGarry lined a ball up the middle to score Lathrop, and Colin Rosenbaum singled through the left to score Beinlich giving the Crusaders a 7-0 lead.

Belmont Abbey kept their foot on the gas as the scored four more runs in the fifth.  Krause launched his eighth home run of the season, over the left field fence, to lead off the fifth.  Beinlich singled to score Nick Nunziato, who had singled, and Rosenbaum smoked a two-RBI single to right field.

Southern Wesleyan rallied in the sixth to score two runs with four consecutive singles, but The Abbey responded with five more runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Kevin Elefante stroked an RBI doubled and Genthe, Stanley, and Adam Arcadia each tallied RBI singles in the inning

Alejandro Nodarse and Stephen Hueber came on in relief of Busby, each recording a strikeout.

On the day, four Crusaders recorded a multi-hit game as Stanley claimed three hits and Beinlich, Rosenbaum, and Lathrop each had two. Rosenbaum drove in four runs and Lathrop tallied three RBI on the night.

The Abbey continues the series against Southern Wesleyan tomorrow with a double header beginning at 1:00 p.m.
