HICKORY, N.C. - The Belmont Abbey baseball team captured a mid-week victory over regional opponent Lenoir-Rhyne Wednesday night. The Crusaders defeated the Bears 4-2, claiming their 11th win of the season moving to 11-11 on the year. Lenoir-Rhyne moves to 14-6.
Abbey starter Troy Herterick kept the LR bats quiet for the majority of his start going 6.1 innings, allowing just two runs on five hits and one walk as he struck out five batters. The Crusaders took an early lead in the third as Luke Cureton tripled and Josh Genthe singled him home.
Lenoir-Rhyne tied the game in the fifth taking advantage of an error, pass ball, and wild pitch. The Bears then took the lead in the sixth as the first two batters of the inning recorded base knocks.
The Crusaders took the lead in the seventh as Kayden Krause mashed his seventh home run of the season over the left field fence. The three-run bomb scored Colin Rosenbaum, who singled, and Nick Nunziato, who was hit by a pitch.
Herterick, who earned his second win of the season, was relieved by Ross Garrett who went 2.2 innings giving up just one hit while recording seven strikeouts in his first save of the year.
The Crusaders will travel to Wilson, N.C. this weekend for a conference series at Barton. A single game Friday will begin at 2:30 followed by a double header Saturday starting at 12:00 p.m.
