GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team defeated Lander Tuesday night to improve to 10-8 on the season. The Crusaders collected 13 hits to defeat the Bearcats 9-4 breaking a 4-4 deadlock in the sixth inning.
Both teams added two runs in the first inning with the Crusaders taking advantage of a Josh Genthe single and Kennan Stanley double, with Nick Beinlich driving in a run on a ground ball and Colin Rosenbaum producing a sacrifice fly. The Bearcats answered with two doubles and a single to go along with a ground out RBI to tie the game.
Lander took the lead in the second frame after another double and single, but The Abbey responded in the next half when Beinlich launched his eighth home run of the season. Belmont Abbey took the lead in the fourth when Genthe scored on Stanley's second double of the game.
Lander (7-9) tied the game back up in the fifth as two hits and wild pitch plated the tying run. The Crusaders retook the lead for good in the sixth scoring two runs off an error and pass ball. BAC starter Troy Hertrick pitched 4.2 innings allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out three. Parker MacPhail came on in relief allowing just one hit while fanning six Bearcats to earn his first win of the season.
The Crusaders added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth as Stanley singled in a run and Thomas Yoder and Luke Cuerton notched RBI doubles.
Stanley went 4-for-5 with two RBI on the day and Kevin Elefante and Cuerton each had multi hit performances.
Belmont Abbey will travel to North Greenville to take on the Crusaders in the conference matchup. Friday's 3:30 p.m. game will be followed up by a double header Saturday beginning at 12:00 noon.
