BELMONT, N.C. – The Crusaders dropped the first of a three game series against Newberry 10-0 Friday night. The Crusaders scattered three hits and two walks but could not push any runs across the plate against Newberry starter Zack Kelly. Kelly threw 7.0 innings allowing two hits one walk while striking out six.
Abbey starter Jeff Thompson matched Kelly for the first three innings fanning three batters and just allowing two hits. The Wolves broke open the scoring in the fourth with two runs following a ground ball and bunt single each drove in runs.
The Wolves tacked on three more runs in the fifth and five more in the eighth off timely hitting with runners in scoring position.
Robert Frantzis relieved Thompson after 4.1 innings. Frantzis hurled 2.2 innings allowing five hits and five runs while striking out four. Troy Heterick and Stephen Hueber each pitched an inning for the Crusaders.
Evan Estridge threw the last two innings for the Wolves allowing a hit and a walk.
The Crusaders complete the series with a double header Saturday with the first game starting at 1:00 p.m.
