Belmont Abbey scored 11 runs in the first five innings as 11 of the Crusaders 17 hits went for extra bases in an 11-6 road win at Emmanuel in the Conference Carolinas opener this afternoon. Belmont Abbey improves to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in Conference Carolinas, while the Lions drop to 1-8 overall and 0-1 in league play.
The series will conclude tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
Emmanuel scored first in the bottom of the first, but the Crusaders answered with four runs in the top of the second on a two RBI single from Conor Kwalwasser and a pair of RBI doubles from Ryan Allen and Levi Wright.
One inning later, Kwalwasser clouted a solo homer and Anthony Dimino made it 6-1 with the first of his two doubles, this one scoring Allen.
The momentum carried into the fourth as Nick Nunziato blasted a solo homer, then one inning later a three run shot by Allen and a run scoring double by Nunziato chased home Dimino for the eleventh run.
That was all Harry Ferguson needed, as he moved his record to 3-0 as the offense gave him plenty of room to work. He allowed six runs, only five earned, in five and one-thirds innings. He fanned four and walked a pair. Robert Taft worked the final three and two thirds innings scoreless to record the save. He struck out six and scattered five hits. He threw 41 pitches, 29 for strikes.
Emmanuel starter Mason Tyler suffered the loss after giving up four runs on five hits, striking out one and walking a pair.
Belmont Abbey rapped out 17 hits as Dimino and Weston Clarke both doubled twice. Allen, Nunziato and Genthe each had one. Allen was just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Allen drove in four runs with Nunziato adding two. Dimino, Clarke and Allen all had three hits.
