The Belmont Abbey baseball team scored five runs in the top of the ninth to overcome a 4-2 deficit as the Crusaders opened a three game series with a 7-5 win at Armstrong Atlantic State this afternoon. Belmont Abbey improves to 18-28, while the Pirates fall to 25-19. The win snaps a five game losing streak as the Crusaders played their first game in 11 days.
The two teams will conclude the 2014 season tomorrow with a noon doubleheader at Pirate Field.
Trailing 4-2 and down to its final three outs, Jon Pilla ripped a two RBI double followed by a two RBI single from Kayden Krause and an insurance run scoring single from Anthony Dimino. Krause, who drove in three runs, broke the 4-4 tie with his single.
Weston Clarke picked up his third save as he allowed a run on a sacrifice fly, but that was the only damage. Tyler Byrnes worked eight solid innings, giving up four runs on nine hits, striking out one as he moved his record to 3-2. He did not walk a batter. Michael Dolan fell to 2-6 as he yielded three runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Ian Vazquez, Krause and Dimino-the top three batters in the lineup-all had two hits as the Abbey rapped out nine. Krause drove in three runs. The defense was error free in the field.
