Baseball Drops Series Opener At #17 Mount Olive, 6-3

The Belmont Abbey baseball team fell at #17 Mount Olive 6-3 this evening in the opening game of a three game Conference Carolinas series. The Trojans improve to 31-11 overall and 14-4 in league play, while the Crusaders fall to 17-24 overall and 7-12 in Conference Carolinas. The two teams will complete the three game series with a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon from Scarborough Field.

The Crusaders outhit the Trojans 8-5 and was error free defensively while the Trojans were saddled with three errors.

Belmont Abbey opened the scoring in the first as Anthony Dimino reached on a fielder's choice, raced to third on a single to center by Weston Clarke and scored on a wild pitch.

The Trojans immediately knotted the game in the bottom half of the inning as Rob Shipman's double down the leftfield line scored Chase Edwards.

The contest stayed tied until the fifth when the Trojans scored five times on three hits to build a 6-1 lead.

Belmont Abbey closed the lead to 6-2 in the sixth on Kayden Krause's sacrifice fly to center scored Lorenzo Wright. Wright capped the scoring in the eighth with a solo homer to left.

The Crusaders pieced together a threat in the top of the ninth as they brought the tying run to the plate, but a strikeout ended the game.

Kodi Whitley moved his record to 5-1 in the victory as he yielded two runs, one earned, on five hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked five. Zach Bernard notched his third save as he pitched the final inning and two thirds, allowing just one hit. Cody Stull fell to 2-6 as he surrendered six runs on five hits in six innings, striking out eight. He did walk seven.

Relievers Kyle Rogers and Robert Taft each pitched one inning without allowing a hit. Taft walked one.

Clarke and Levi Wright both had two hits. Six of the nine batters reached on a walk.
