MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS AT MOUNT OLIVE, 81-62
MOUNT OLIVE, NC - Belmont Abbey senior guard Brooks Beard led the Crusaders with 14 points and senior forward Anthony Bell added 10, but MountOlive had four players reach double figures as the Trojans defeated the Abbey 81-62 at Kornegay Arena this evening. MountOlive improves to 11-4 overall and 5-3 in the CVAC, while Belmont Abbey falls to 4-9 overall and 3-5 in the CVAC.
Beard led the Crusaders with 14 points on five of 11 shooting from the floor, to go along with four assists and a steal in 29 minutes. Bell finished with 10 points as the Abbey shot 35.8 percent (19-53) from the floor. Freshman forward Chad Patus finished with eight points and a career-high eight rebounds.
The first ten minutes of the game was closely contested, featuring four ties and five lead changes, with neither team taking a lead any bigger than three points. With the game tied at 17 with 9:49 left, MountOlive took the lead for good on a Brandon Streeter jumper which started a 12-4 MountOlive run that stretched its lead to nine at 30-21 with 5:42 left.
The Abbey countered with a 9-4 run, using a dunk by senior forward Sidney Hoff, a layup from Beard, two Ric Marczenko free throws, and capped off by a three-pointer by Bell, to pull the Crusaders within four at 34-30 with 1:30 left. Mount Olive would score the final four points of the stanza, a free throw by Elton Cofield and a three pointer by Josh Brown, to take a 38-30 lead into the break.
MountOlive began the second half on an 8-4 mini-run to open its lead to 12 points, and from there, the Abbey could not get any closer than nine points at 48-39 on a dunk by Hoff. MountOlive would put the game away on a 20-6 run to end any Abbey threat, and it went on to win the contest, 81-62.
The Abbey is back in action Wednesday when it goes on the road to face North Greenville. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
