SPARTANBURG, SC – The Belmont Abbey volleyball team opened the 2006 season in style as it recorded a 3-0 sweep of Elizabeth City State this afternoon in the Converse College Invitational, giving first year Crusaders coach Lettie Wilkes her first collegiate win. Game scores were 31-29, 30-23 and 30-23.
The Crusaders were led by junior Ashley Ringlein’s nine kills and eight total blocks. Senior Latoya Gordon added six blocks. Senior Clarissa Stull and sophomore Monica Halligan, who were both named to the CVAC Players to Watch list, had solid matches, as Stull registered eight kills and Halligan finished with five service aces and 25 digs. Setter Sawyer Coble handed out 27 assists.
Belmont Abbey will be back in action later this evening when it will take on North Carolina Central.
