ALLENDALE, MI -The Belmont Abbey men’s golf team fired an 18 over par 302 as it sits in a tie for tenth after the opening round of the 2007 NCAA Division II Golf Championships, held at The Meadows, a par 71 6,992 yard course hosted by Grand Valley State University.

The Abbey, which is making its first appearance in the nationals in the program’s history, was paced by freshman Joe Campbell, who opened with a three over 74 to sit in a tie for 25th.  Campbell birdied the par four sixth and the par five 14th, as he carded matching 37s on the front and back nine.

Three Crusaders posted scores of five over par 76, as senior Kasey Timms and freshmen Conor Tomlinson and Chris Baron all sit in a tie for 47th.  Timms fired a 39 on the front nine which included a birdie on the par four sixth hole, his only sub par score of the round. He completed the back nine with a 37. 

Tomlinson also birdied the par four sixth for his only sub-par score of his round, as he fired a 38 on the front and back nine. Baron also posted matching 38s on the front and back nine. He birdied the par three 13th hole.

Sophomore Matt Chidester opened with a ten over par 81, going out in 40 and coming in with a 41.

The second round of the 72 hole championship gets underway tomorrow morning.
