Men's Volleyball Adds Three More For 2013 Inaugural Season

Belmont Abbey men's volleyball head coach Mary DeJute announced the signing of three additional recruits for 2013. Current high school senior Derek Sullivan (Midlothian, VA), transfer Eddie Pennington (Denver, CO), and transfer Brandon Kimbrell (Escondido, CA) have signed with the Crusaders for their inaugural season.

"I am thrilled with the addition of these young men,” DeJute said. “These three players will put our program in good shape for future success.”

Sullivan is a 6-5 setter from Cosby High School in Midlothian, VA. He currently plays for the Richmond Volleyball Club. A four year letter winner for Cosby High school varsity volleyball team Sullivan was named first team all-district, second team all-region, and second team all-metro.

“Derek is extremely athletic with a high ceiling of potential,” DeJute said. “His hands are soft and controlled. He will be a great court leader.”

Pennington is a 6-2 opposite hitter from Metro State college of Denver. Pennington attended Bishop Machebeuf High School in Denver, CO. A 2009 all-state selection, Pennington helped his high school team to a state elite eight appearance. Pennington also assisted in coaching Bishop Machebeuf’s 2010 state championship team under Trey Salinas, current assistant men’s and women’s volleyball coach at Belmont Abbey.

“Eddie has the focus and desire to be a great player. He is a true team player and knows what it takes to win." said DeJute

Kimbrell is a 6-6 outside hitter from Palomar Junior College. Kimbrell attended San Pasqual High School in Escondido, CA. A three year letter winner for the San Pasqual varsity volleyball team, Kimbrell was named San Diego County second team all-CIF, San Diego senior all-star, and first-team all avocado league. A two year team captain and team MVP, Kimbrell played club volleyball for the prominent Wave Volleyball club under esteemed coach and club director Jed Stotsenberg.

DeJute said, “Brandon is a very animated player with a high level of playing experience. He is a strong block with a big swing. Kimbrell has very high expectations for himself and I know he will work to meet these expectations".

Belmont Abbey Men’s volleyball competes in Conference Carolinas. The second largest men’s volleyball conference in the nation, Conference Carolinas will consist of nine Men’s NCAA DI-II volleyball teams in 2013. The conference will gain an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2014.
