Women's Lacrosse Upends Queens, 12-10 To Earn Berth In Conference Tournament Final

Megan Patton Led The Crusaders With Four Goals

Belmont Abbey's Megan Patton led the Crusaders with four goals, while Katy Connery and Laura Dowd notched three and two, respectively as the Crusaders women's lacrosse team defeated Queens 12-10 in the semifinal round of the 2012 Conference Carolinas Tournament. The Abbey advances to the championship match Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against top-seeded Limestone with a record of 9-6, while Queens ends its season at 8-9. Three of Queen'ss nine losses came to the Crusaders.

Patton also totaled six draw controls as Gina Colella collected five. Tory Morgan played in goal notching 11 saves, five ground balls and two caused turnovers.

After notching back-to-back points around the 20 minute mark, Queens held a 2-1 lead early in the first. The Crusaders responded with five unanswered goals to close the half with a 6-2 lead.

Queens’ Shannon Casey came out in the second with an aggressive attack putting three in the back of the net closing Belmont Abbey’s lead to one, 6-5. Patton would score the Crusaders’ first goal of the second at 23:26 and Emily Hudgins would follow with one of her own increasing their lead back out to three, 8-5, before Brittany Barnwell responded with two in a row bringing Queens to within one again, 8-7, with 16:16 on the clock.

Feeling the Royals on their backs with a 9-8 lead at 10:51, the Crusaders found two in a row increasing their lead to three, 11-8. Queens would not get any closer than two for the remainder of play as Belmont Abbey took the win advancing to face No. 4 Limestone.

Both teams took 29 shots and totaled 23 ground balls each.
