October 22, 2011 Men's Soccer Falls In Overtime At Carson-Newman, 3-2 Jose Penaloza Put The Abbey Up 2-1 |
The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team lost at Carson-Newman in overtime, 3-2 this evening. The Eagles scored just two minutes into the extra period after both teams scored two goals in the opening 90 minutes. The win moves the Eagles record to 5-8-1, while the Abbey drops to 5-10-1. After Carson-Newman scored a first half goal and carried that lead into the break, Ross Smith knotted the game at one in the 60th minute when he volleyed home a throw-in off the bounce. Three minutes later, Jose Penaloza gave the Crusaders the lead when he took advantage of a miscue by the Eagles goalkeeper and scored into an empty net to push the Abbey ahead. The lead stood for only seven minutes as Carson-Newman's Tyson Adkinson sent a through ball past two Abbey defenders to the feet of Robert Hill, whose shot curled past Sergio Ramirez for the equalizer. Neither team scored again in regulation, sending the contest into extra time, where Adkinson's initial shot was stopped by Ramirez, but he headed home the rebound for the game winner. Carson-Newman outshot the Abbey 31-5. Both teams attempted four corner kicks. Related Item: Box Score |
