December 21, 2009 Three Women's Soccer Players Earn Post-Season HonorsBelmont Abbey sophomore forward Connie Axiotis senior defender Amanda Maddock and senior forward Celene Molera were recognized with postseason honors by a multitude of organizations. Axiotis earned first-team all-region honors by Daktronics and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, as well as first-team all-state honors by the North Carolina Sports Information Directors Association. Maddock was named second-team all-region by Daktronics and by the NSCAA, and Molera picked up third-team all-region honors by the NSCAA. Axiotis, who was named the Conference Carolinas Player of the Year and earned a spot on the conferences's first-team, started all 20 matches and scored 14 goals and assisted on four others. Of her 14 goals, 11 of them, a league-best, came in conference play, and her 23 points in conference games was also the league high. She also led the league in goals per game in conference play. Maddock anchored a defense that allowed just nine goals, tied for the fewest allowed in conference play. She added three goals, including a penalty kick conversion in the Conference Carolinas tournament quarterfinal win over Mount Olive. Molera, a first-team all-conference selection, found the back of the net five times and recording an assist on two other occasions. Her three game winning goals in conference is third in the league rankings. |
